Celebration meals.

(breakfast fixings: potatoes, onions, zucchini, tomatoes, garlic.)

If you are stressing out thinking about your celebration meal(s) you are not alone. We want so much to recapture all the wonderful memories of previous holidays, as well as add surprises to today's meal.
I concentrate on the main Christmas meal; for everything else, I try to simplify.

On the menu this year:
Christmas Eve: Fresh crab, served chilled, with hot butter, a fruit salad, a potato salad, crusty bread and chilled pinot gris.
Note: this year's storms are delaying our crab season. I'm prepared to switch to a cioppino made with shrimp, clams and mussels from the frozen food department

Shopping list:
1/2 a crab per person (your supermarket will sell freshly boiled and chilled crab. ask them to clean it before hand)
deli potato salad
deli fruit salad
La Brea whole wheat loaf
butter
local pinot gris (I like King Estate's)

For the Christmas Feast:

Standing Prime Rib (local beef from the Browns)
tossed green salad with pomegranite seeds
roasted root vegetables
au-juice
horseradish sauce
steamed green beans
popovers
Pinot noir or Cabarnet
panettone and ice cream for dessert

What's on your table this season?

  1. We do a standing rib roast too. And I found a yummy arugula and fennel salad on Epicurious that will be added. Usually, Christmas Eve a traditional Polish/Czech meal from my mom's side of the family, but this year we decided to skip it, too sad for us all.

Simple brunch Christmas morning. Hopefully leftovers for the next couple of days

    Merry Christmas!

  2. We're having a simple Christmas Eve dinner this year for two neighbors who have been ill. I'll be making a roast with braised vegetables, popovers (my father's recipe) with melted butter and apple pie a la mode for dessert. I love YOUR menu plans -- very inspiring for future holiday endeavors!

  3. Yum! Thanks for this menu. Too bad I already bought the food for our meals. Ours will not be a special as your, but I think they will be fine. We are having roast turkey, a gift from oldest step-daughter, ham, home-made rolls, scalloped potatoes, a spinach salad, sweet potatoes, and stollen for Christmas Eve. We will celebrate with my daughter and her two children. My sister will join us too.

I don't ever do a Christmas dinner. We do a brunch instead and then it is sandwich time the rest of the day.
