Food Rule Number Six: Gather your Food!

I prepare breakfast on this counter, with my rooster friend here helping salute the day!

This week, we stopped at  our U-Pick farm on Floras Creek and collected strawberries and raspberries.

For the next few days, these beauties will be transformed.
Hubby will want pies and cobblers.
These are plump and juicy morsels of instant sunshiny goodness, both tart and sweet, smelling of the fog and the ocean breezes that nurtured them. They will become stars at each of our meals this week.

Pancakes, and blintzes come to mind.  How about you? What delectable concoctions will you prepare with this abundance?

It's seven thirty and early enough for me to whip up a cobbler, served hot in one hour when Hubby wakes up, alongside a bowl of ricotta with hints of orange.  Yum! Got to go. Oh, here is the recipe, should you want to make your own.

Raspberry Cobbler downloaded from Cooks.com

1/2c melted butter
3/4c milk
1 1/2c sugar
1c flour
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
2-4 cups of raspberries

Pour the melted butter into the bottom of a 7"X11" baking dish. Mix together the milk, 1 cup of sugar, flour and baking powder. Pour this mixture over the butter. Do Not Stir.

Pour the berries over the batter and butter. Do Not Stir.

Pour the remaining sugar over the berries. Do Not Stir.

Bake the cobbler at 350 degrees for 30-45 minutes, or until the crust is browned and set.

Happy Eating!

  1. I have never made a cobbler this way ... but can't wait to try it. My grandmother used to pour boiling water from her old tea kettle over a cobbler just after removing it from the oven. Have you ever heard of that?

  2. No! But it must have worked for her! I just finished baking, and it is amazing! I used four cups of berries, and it worked. Now, we'll have it for a couple of meals! Next time, I might cut back some of the sugar. I like mine a bit tart.

It was in the high seventies yesterday here on the coast, hotter than any summer day. How are you faring?

  4. Note: the recipe makes six servings! It's sweet, all right, but it will do for most people's tastes. I thought I'd freeze the rest. No. We ate it all up!
I'm making a big batch for my Readers' Group as it looks and tastes divine.

  5. Fresh berries always make me think of cobblers, crisps and tarts too. Berry desserts are my favorite.

  6. Postscript: Hubby made a raspberry pie with tapioca! Yes, we are eating everything up this week. I guess we'll have to go pick more.
Picking your own is good fun. The strawberries cost $2 a pound, the raspberries, $3.
If you have a chance to pick your own, do. With care, you'll bring home the best of the best for the same price, if not cheaper than the old stuff you can get in the supermarket.

p.p.s some berries are grown just for local markets, because they don't travel well. These you want, morsels of intense flavor you can't get anywhere else.

Tell us about your experiences with local food.
